New in the USA Section

New Links

Nineteen new U.S. links have been added to the U.S. genealogy section.  Another new set of links has also been added to the Canadian Métis links section of the site.

New Article

Several  weeks ago a Métis colleague, William "Billy" Brady posted a message to the Metis Culture listserv which completely captured my attention.  The message contained excerpts from an article by Professor Jack D. Forbes which highlights the creation of a Metis population of mixed Black and Indian peoples in the colonial state of Virginia.  With the kind permission of  Professor Forbes that excert is reproduced at this link.

New Information Provider

I am very happy to announce a new Information Provider to The Other Metis. Mary Harper-Bellis is a founding member of the rejuvenated North American Metis Association (NAMA) and has agreed to have her reports on her own research on Metis in the USA featured on this site. Her first report - Quebec to Ogdensburg to Oswego and Beyond - will,  I hope, stimulate others to rediscover Metis families and communities in the USA. Mary has been on the founding Boards of six national organizations and has dedicated herself to helping to build a future for the Metis children.

I must admit that, as a Canadian Métis, I am a little uncomfortable with writing about Métis in the United States.  For several years I have been searching the net in the hopes an American Métis site would surface to which I could transfer the data I have collected over the years. Unfortun- ately, that has not happened and I honestly feel I can no longer wait for my American counterpart to just appear.

There are several U.S. Métis sites already online, to be sure, and links to all of those I am aware of  will be found in the U.S. Métis link section..  None of them, however, seem to have the broad historical scope and awareness of historic Metis in the U.S. that I think is so necessary to provide a solid information base from which Métis everywhere in the U.S. can draw.

Having decided to take the plunge myself, I have now reorganized the

existing U.S. Information on this site to this location. Articles, bibliography, links, and genealogy data related to Métis in the U.S. will now be found interconnected from this page.  I considered setting up a listserv for U.S. Métis separate from the existing Other Metis list, but since that list is so under used, I simply invite U.S. Metis to participate in the existing list. If anyone has ideas or information that could be added to the site I welcome other information providers to contribute.
