LETTER TO THE MÉTIS PEOPLE OF CANADA
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

We are living in an extremely important and decisive period of time, spiritually, culturally, socially and politicly that could have disastrous consequences on our life, and the lives of our children and our grand children, The Métis Nation in the province of Québec with the support of the Confederacy of the Métis people is providing you with documentation for your consideration. We suggest that you read this material carefully and that you circulate it among other Métis people.

The data in this section contains two parallel segments. The first is a summary of the work developed by a group of Métis in the province of Québec who are convinced their Métis heritage is the centre of their identity. The second is an analysis of the present situation of Métis and some significant propositions toward the development of a distinct society for the Métis Nation in the province of Québec and for the Métis Nation as a whole.

The Métis Nation in the Province of Québec is not primarily concerned with the current number of its citizens. The Métis Nation in the province of Québec is more concerned with the conviction, dedication and commitment of its citizens.

Our group invites you to discuss this documentation among yourselves and at your community meetings. Members of the group from the Québec region are available to clarify issues or to provide you with any further explanation you may require on this data.

If you find yourself interested in these issues and that your objectives are similar to others who are convinced of the significance their Métis identity and if you wish to belong to a Confederacy of Métis people in pursuit of unity of all the Métis people, you must make sure that all the Métis people of your community have the respect of both the First Nations, and the general Canadian population.

It is time that the Métis fly with their own wings, as equals and in partnership with any other First Nation in the Province of Québec and elsewhere. Métis must participate in the implementation of their own governmental structures according to a democratic process designed to address the specific needs of the Métis. This process must guarantee an open discussion and an open dialogue among the Métis people to clear the air and to build our own future.

In these difficult times of political struggle, we are asking you, as a Métis, to be extremely vigilant towards those political organizations who do not recognize all Métis as a distinct society and expecially with those who, in these last few years, had the opportunity to advance the development of the Métis Nation, and have failed.

We have no more time to lose. We must spent all our energy on building our future as Métis people. No one else can do it for us. It is our time to speak and to be heard. Lets speak out and lets declare who we are once for all.

Our spiritual, cultural, social and political future can no longer be just a subject of discussion for annual election campaigns, only to end up on the shelf as the forgotten people of any political organisations. Our future requires strong conviction and a full commitment of what we are in every second of our life as Métis. This means we can no longer accept compromise or to be perceive as objects of political trade-offs within other organisations.

We are a Nation of people and we must delare to these organisation that we are no longer going to take it any more. They must respect the fact that we intend to develop ourselves as a Nation of People within our own government structures.

We encourage you, as a Métis,to support of our collective future. We urge you to clearly demonstrate your ties to a cause that all Métis who are convinced of their true identity heartily recognise. And that is the empowerment our Nation to achieve self-determination and self-government for all and by all the Métis people of Québec and Canada without exception, with respect and honesty, through sharing and caring, and in friendship with all the Métis Nations in Canada.

The spirit of the Métis Nation and the spirit of our ancestors is calling us to unite from coast to coast in respect for one another around the sacred fire of our great new Nation, the Métis Nation.
