Since the Other Metis went on linesome five or six years ago the interest about all things Metis has steadilyincreased.  There are now well over 500 Metis sites on line most ofwhich fall into one of  three categories: sites selling Metis products;billboard sites for a variety of Metis organizations, and sites presentingMetis history in various parts of Canada.  Some sites do all three. There are relatively few sites, however, that deal with the current reality,in comeptual terms,  of Metis peoples across North America and itis that niche which this series of articles is designed to fill.

I am not going to repeat the litanyabout fur trade children, Riel Resistances, and historic dispossessionof the Metis.  That can be found on other pages on this and otherMetis sites.  What I want to concentrate on here is the situationof  Metis peoples as they are today. In order to avoid  repetitionof  information in other articles on this site, I will provide linksfrom this page to those articles or more detailed information on some ofthe topics which are briefly addressed here.  Visitors should be warnedthat return links to this page  will not always  be availableon most of those other pages. It will be necessary to use your - Back - <--- button to return to this article.  If you get lost just hitthe Index link at the bottom of any page and then click the Metis 101 linkyou will find there.  <Notes> indicators inserted into the textwill, however, have a -Return- link attached to each note on the Notespage.

Last year I was encouraged topost a kind of  Metis 101 essay to a listserv I subscribed to whichwould serve as both  an introduction to and summary of what the wholeMetis thing is about. Part 1 is a revision of that exercise which I hopewill be useful to visitors here who are trying to get their heads aroundMetis issues and realities.

Hits on the site reached a peak of 85,000in March of last year and, given the very encouraging response to the firstarticle in this series, I am now -- at last -- prepared to offer a secondsegment.  Part 2 is a look at Metis organizations.  As with mostof the material on this site, this article is refelective of my own experienceand point of view of almost 20+ years full time employment with Metis organizationsand the events which influenced them during that period.

For those who have already read Part1, (now titled Metis in Canada Today)  the second link below willtake you directly to Part 2
