Resolution No. 26 - Provincial Government Recognition of Métis

Whereas: All governments in Canada unanimously agreed in the context of the Charlottetown Agreement that the principle of equity of access to Aboriginal and Treaty Rights should be applied to all Aboriginal people in Canada; and 

Whereas The term ìMétisî was negotiated into the Constitution Act, 1982, to include all of the Métis constituency of the Native Council of Canada in every part of Canada; and 

Whereas the government of the Province of Quebec has not provided appropriate recognition to the Métis Nation in Quebec; and 

Whereas the government of the Province of Newfoundland has repeatedly refused to recognize the existence of the Métis people of Labrador; 

Therefore be it resolved; 

That the Executive Council of the Native Council of Canada be instructed to formally request, by registered letter to every Provincial Premier and Territorial head of government in Canada, that each government make a formal declaration of recognition in their respective legislatures to the effect that: 

1. their government recognize the existence of Métis individuals and collectivities within their provincial and territorial borders, and that 

2. recognize that such Métis individuals and collectivites have such Section 35 Aboriginal and Treaty rights as may pertain to them.
