Resolution No. 25 - Representation of Métis

Whereas: The Native Council of Canada, has from its inception in 1971, represented and continues to represent, the interests of Métis peoples; and 

Whereas: Some federal officials have demonstrated a reluctance to recognize this fact in a formal and public way, and 

Whereas: The Prime Minister of Canada, as Minister of Justice in 1981, in negotiations with the Native Council of Canada, agreed to include the term ìMétisî in Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 as representative of all of the constituents of the Native Council of Canada who identify themselves as Métis: 

Therefore, Be It Resolved, 

That this Annual General Meeting of the Native Council of Canada call upon the Prime Minister, to exercise his responsibility as a holder of the Aboriginal Order of Canada, by: 

1. Affirming in writing the recognition of the government of Canada that the NCC is an Aboriginal organization 
which represents, among, other Aboriginal peoples, Métis people in many parts of Canada: and 

2. Instructing his Ministers to carry out this affirmation in the context of policy development, consultation on 
Métis issues, self-government negotiation processes and delivery of Federal programs and services to Métis peoples in every part of Canada.
