Resolution No. 23 - Aboriginal and Treaty Rights and Claims of Métis

Whereas the Aboriginal and Treaty Rights of all of the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada are recognized and affirmed in Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982; and 

Whereas 

Métis are identified as one of the Aboriginal people of Canada; 

Therefore, Be It Resolved 

That the annual meeting of the Native Council of Canada does hereby reaffirm its position that the Métis People of Canada possess Aboriginal title which flows from the fact of their descent from their nations of origin; and 

Be it further resolved, 

That the annual meeting of the Native Council of Canada does hereby affirm that many Métis peoples have Treaty rights flowing from both pre-Confederation and post-Confederation. treaties; and 

Be it further resolved 

That the Executive Council and Executive Committee be instructed to include specific mention of the Métis in any position paper or policy statement in which the Aboriginal and Treaty Rights of the Aboriginal People is raised.
