| To compile the titles included in this bookstore I did six separate
searches in Amazon.com ( for "Metis" - "Halfbreed" - "Half Breed" - "Riel"
- "native genealogy" and "fur trade" on February 29, 1998. I then
eliminated duplicate titles and those that seemed to be less promising
(in terms of Métis information) than the others. The first
list below contains, in alphabetical order, 153 titles from the first five
searches. The "fur trade" hits are listed via this link. I
should point out that I deleted at least half of the fur trade hits --
mostly mid- and southern U.S.A.
Books with a "*" mark in front of them are in my library and [square-braketed comments and reviews] are my own opinion and subject to my own biases. If others wish to write reviews on books I haven't read or want to counter my own opinions, I would be happy to include them. The fact that a book is in my library does not necessarily mean I
recommend it. In my work I have to know what the "enemy" is thinking,
writing, and reading so I buy a lot of books I don't really enjoy.
I also need to know what others are writing so I don't have to repeat the
material in my own work, or so I can challenge or contradict what some
writers are writing. But I thought it would be useful for people
to know what is available online. At the same time I was surprised
to discover only about half of the Metis books in my library were listed
in the database.

In spite of recommendation to the contrary
by the folks at Amazon.com. I have decided to leave the prices on the titles
as supplied during my searches. Be warned however that prices are
"ball-park" at best and can change without notice. The price at point
of purchase on the Amazon.com site will prevail.

[One of the first books I read (1974) on the Riel Resistance, and still
one of the best. The American author is not weighted down with pro-British
sentiments and although the book is critisized for its lack of footnotes,
it is still one of the most readable accounts available.]
